Increase of News about Missionary and Missionaries
We observed that there is an increase in the news and the articles about missionaries and missionary at local and national newspapers in March while media scanning for our Media Watch and Hate Speech Project.
Within the newspapers that we scan, the number of the news and the articles about missionaries and missionary was 183 in March whereas it was 113 in January and 130 in February.
In the first five days of April, 55 articles were published about missionaries and missionary.
We detected 226 news and articles published about missionaries and missionary between 1st of March and 5th of April in 48 local and national newspapers via pr.net media watch center.
43 out of 226 articles have discriminative and finger-pointing content. 22 of them consist of news and 21 of consist of articles.
According to the categories that we had prepared for hate speech on ethnic and religious discrimination, 43 news and articles are classified as exaggeration/willfully misinterpretation and 20 of them as enmity/war discourse.
It is remarkable that most of the analyzed articles consist of declarations of various people on missionaries and missionary. Another remarkable point is that the newspapers of nationalist/conservative ideological standpoint published news and articles that endorses the perception of missionaries’ being a massive threat.
